Why is Jaipur called The Pink City?

In 1876, Prince Albert visited Jaipur.

Because pink was considered the colour of welcome and hospitality at the time, Maharaja Ram Singh organised for the whole city painted pink to welcome the royal guest.

On his visit, Prince Albert was said to have described Jaipur as the ‘Pink City’, hence why Jaipur is know as the Pink City today.

The paint is produced from a calcium oxide compound and is extremely durable in the arid conditions of Jaipur.

The colour becomes even more beautiful as it fades and is decaying and cracking.

Pink City of India

Designers Guild Jaipur Rose  collection is a beautiful Jaipur dusk colour which is based on an array of sensitive pinks and natural colours found within the amber fort and inspired by Jaipur.

Since returning from Jaipur, I’m so happy to find the soft vintage pink colour of the city is all around me.

Even in this dried up hydrangea that is on the kitchen side.
