Often I forget how easy it is to pop to an exhibition. Here is one suggestion for the summer – Quilts by Faith Ringgold at the Serpentine in London.
Something a little different which will not disappoint.
It is the African American artist’s first show in Britain and is now open at the Serpentine
Originally it was the Faith Ringgold art, but now it’s the Faith Ringgold Quilts which gave her international recognition. The Faith Ringgold Story Quilts are a mixture of painted and quilted fabrics. They are pictorial in content, frank in form and accessible in style.
They tell stories of lives lived as African American women and men in a culture constructed from their blood, sweat and tears, often neglectful of their needs and aspirations. By sewing soft pictures, with narrative imagery and colourful motifs, Ringgold persists in making a strong and memorable impact.

For more than five decades, Ringgold has consistently challenged perceptions of African American identity and gender inequality through the lenses of the feminist and the civil rights movements. As cultural assumptions and prejudices persist, her work retains its contemporary resonance.
It’s all really fabulous and free!
It is a perfect weekend stroll across Kensington Gardens, along the boating lake, past the Albert Memorial to the wonderful Serpentine Gallery. If you head off early enough, you could even find time for the V&A just down the road!
All you need is a picnic!
It’s on until the 8th September, so grab your picnic blanket and head to the Serpentine.
