The Challenge…

1. Household Items
Take 8 everyday household objects from around the home to sketch. Only take 2 minutes for each object – use a timer so you don’t cheat!

All on one piece of paper where possible – it’s a fabulous exercise to get you started and looking at what is in front of you.  Keep going if you want and add more time. 5 minutes, 10 minutes ….

2. Self-portrait with a twist
Draw a self-portrait in 25 minutes with your left hand. You can use charcoal or a soft pencil.

3. Charcoal jacket
Using charcoal, draw a jacket hanging on a chair or hook.

4. Single flower
Using a bottle of black Indian ink, water, a medium brush, and a kebab stick (or thin stick), paint a single stem spring flower in a bottle. Draw the bottle from 3 different angles, trying different ways with the medium.

5. Continuous line drawing
Draw a continuous line drawing without lifting your pencil until your large piece of paper is completely full. The subject? … Whatever is in your head!

Start with something random, like a mouse and draw the first thing that comes to mind. An example: A mouse, then cheese, apple, tree, wood, saw, and so on…. Like the game on long car journeys. One idea to another as it pops into your head, and don’t lift your pencil until your page is stuffed full in every corner!

6. With a twist
Take an everyday object and turn it into something more imaginative.

7. A local scene in 5 lines
Sketch a scene from your home, bedroom or street. Abstract the same drawing by repeating it, using just 5 lines to represent it .

Let us know your thoughts and ideas – we would love to hear from you.
